| HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Alexandria, Egypt was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C. His vision was to establish a center for world trade. Alexander never saw the achievement of his dreams. He died returning from conquests in Asia in 323 B.C. One of Alexanders generals, Ptolemy Soter, seized control of the government, and became King of Egypt. Ptolemy made Alexandria his capital. The city was magnificent. Streets were paved with stone, and lighted by public lamps. An elaborate system of city water pipes supplied every home with running water. There were stadiums, concert halls, public baths and gymnasiums. King Ptolemy admired Greek culture and had a great interest in the arts. He established the Library of Alexandria, known at that time as the "Royal Museum". He invited scholars to Alexandria and granted them salary stipends free room and board, and exemption from taxes. All travellers entering Egypt were ordered to hand over any written document they carried to the proprietors of the Library. Ptolemys dream was to create a universal library - one which would contain every known manuscript in the world. |
