| Passage One Marie Curie is one of the most famous scientists of all time. Her father was a science teacher in Warsaw and, although the family was poor, all five children were very clever and shared their fathers interest in science. She left school with a Gold Medal and went abroad to continue her education. She arrived in Paris in 1891 with her very little money, but she was full of eageness to learn. She got the highest marks in her class for the degree examination in physics in 1893. She was the second highest in the examination in mathematics in the following year. In this same year she met with Pierre Curie, a young scientists, and in 1895 they married. Their marriage was an ideally happy one. They shared enthusiasm for their work. Marie and Pierre found a whole new material, the strongest source of radioactivity. They called it radium. |
