内容摘要:
1. What Is Dietotherapy?

I suppose many rcaders are annoyed by taking mcdicines when thcy get

ill. Some medicines are very peculiar, particularly those dccoctions made from

herbal compounds which arc not only bitter, hot, sour and puckery, but also

some of the tastes are so strange that one cannot evcn tell what they are!

However, for the sakc of treatment, what else can one do but pinch his nose

and swallow it down.

Things might bc even worsc if your sick child is not obcdient. He might

run off as soon as he sees that medicinc. What can you do then? You have

to grab him, convince him to open his mouth, and then pour the mcdicine

down his throat by pinching his nostrils. Unfortunately, if the process is not

properly handled, liquid may cscape down that trachea causing more compli-

carions, sbme even very serious. As for biomcdicine, pcoplc arc no more

accustomcd to its dmgs than to the traditional ones. Though many of the

bitter dmgs arc sugar-coated, childrcn rcfuse to accept injections of any kind.

Even worsc, infants tum their backs toward the nurse and cry. Somc even cry

at their first glance of someonc wcaring a white uniform or gown.

How nice it would be if the dccoction or bitter drugs to be taken could

be made of foodsruffs or cven tastc like food!

Dietotherapy is a science which rcfcrs to the treatmcnt of discase by thc

consumption of common foodstuffs; in China, these -are sometimcs callcd

medicinal foods. The intake of food is necessary for the maintenance of

everyone's daily life and activity. Food contains various nutricnts which are

essential to human lifc and provide thc energy supply for the body's growth

and activiries. The old Chinese saying rhat "food is the first necessity for the

people" reflecrs the vital importance of food in daily life.

Nutrients are essential for people during illness to overcome pathogenic

factors and repair tissue damage, as well as to resist and prevcnt diseases while

in good health.

The art of dietotherapy roughly includes the following: firstly, investi-

gating thc nature of food for preventing and treating diseases. In scurvy, a

discase due to vitamin C deflciency, the eating of oranges, tangerines, or other

fmit rich in vitamin C is hclpful. Again, garlic behaves both as a food and

as a remedy for bacillary dysentery. Secondly, investigating curative effects

achieved by carefully selecting certain kinds of drugs and adding them to food

to complemcnt each other. For instance rice porridgc is readily digested and

nutritionally bencflcial to patients. However, when radix discoreae, poria, or

coix seeds are added, the porridge will have a strong anti-diarrhoca action

through strengthening the spleen and improving digestion.

At present, the contents of dietotherapy are bcing greatly expanded.

During the last few decades, cancer and cardiovascular diseases have replaced

infectious discascs as the major enemy to human health. These two categories

of disorders, especially cardiovascular diseases, are closely tied to food habits.

Coronary hcart disease, the most common cardiovascular disease, resulrs from

high blood cholesterol, which accumulates on the walls of the coronary vessels

and lcads to sclcrosis. This process takes a long time to develop, perhaps eight

to 10 ycars, or cven as long as scveral decades. However, laboratory

invcstigations rcvcal that signs of such pathologic changcs in thc coronary

vesscls can bcgin to appcar during a person's 30s or even earlicr. This reminds

us that, so long as we pay attcntion to and reasonably adjust our daily food

and drink, thc proccss of arteriosclerosis can be greatly postponed or even

prcvcntcd. Thereforc, it is advisable, for macrobiotic purposes, to start onc's

healthy diet regimc as carly as possible to prevent thc onset of obcsity.

Dictotherapy should includc two further closely interwoven aspects,

namely, the devclopmcnt of cooking techniqucs to eliminate unpleasant tastes

or odours from drugs, instead producing tasty and attractive foods, and thc

study of ncw foods with thcrapcutic potcntial and thcir recipcs.
